  • What are your key roles and responsibilities?
    Like any project manager, I'm responsible for the overall performance of a number of projects. So that would include the management of costs, programme and resource, liaising pretty much constantly with the client, suppliers and subcontractors, and also ensuring all CDM documentation is correct and in place. There's also a reporting requirement to the job - I have to send monthly progress reports to both our MD and CD and send KPI information to Network Rail. I'm also there to support the team, both on track and off. It's not all about work - as far as I'm concerned, I've got a responsibility to look out for the people working on my project. If I can help them in any way, I will.
  • What does a typical day look like for you?
    Every day is different - there's no such thing as a typical day! Every week, though, I have to do pretty much the same things. On Monday I'll approve all timesheets and update cost and sales on all projects I'm managing. I'll then attend various planning meetings to discuss upcoming works and outstanding items or queries. On a Tuesday morning I'll go to our weekly labour allocation meeting to help allocate all staff across the business, spending the afternoon discussing various metrics with the management team. There's a lot of meetings involved in this job, many of them with clients and suppliers to ensure all parties are aligned with the outputs expected. If there are any tendering opportunities, I'll play a part in that and, towards the end of the week, I'll make sure that all paperwork and joining instructions are sorted for the next week on site.
  • What qualities do you need to be good at your job?
    Organisational skills are essential - but I guess that applies to so many of the roles at Amaro, especially the office and supervisory roles. The ability to multi-task is important as is a strong work ethic and a conscientious mindset. For me, I'm only as good as my last project so I put everything into making sure it goes off without a hitch.

  • Describe your journey since being at Amaro
    I've been at Amaro for nearly five years now and, although I joined as a planning manager, within just over eighteen months I was promoted to project manager. That's what I love about working here - you're not pigeonholed because of your job title or your previous experience. Your abilities are immediately recognised and, if someone spots something in you, you'll be supported and mentored to get where you want to go.
  • How has the business supported you in your role?
    Ever since I've joined, Micky (our MD) has pushed me to develop myself, upskilling via training whether that be external or internal, making sure I've always had a clear plan in place to get me where I want to be professionally.
  • Would you recommend Amaro to someone looking for a job?
    Of course I would, yes. For me it's all about great people and great progression opportunities. We've got such a good team here - I'd struggle to imagine working anywhere else, I'll be honest. And the promotion and improvement prospects for those already within the team are excellent.
