A signalling, power and telecoms specialist operating throughout the UK, we work alongside contractors, consultants, and train operators to deliver ETCS, digital signalling, and the data systems behind them, acting as a genuine extension of their own teams.
In the coming years, CP8 will see a huge amount of digital and power infrastructure work come to market, with much of that being driven by electrification and the move to digital signalling and train control, alongside the network’s large amounts of aging and end-of-life infrastructure.
Yes, there’s a great deal of work to do, but It’s work we’ve been preparing for; innovating, exploring new technologies, and expanding our services so that we’re ready to support our clients when the time comes.
Our digital services focus on the areas where signalling, telecoms and power meet, including ETCS-compatible infrastructure, Eurobalise and Tracklink 3, FTNx migration, SCADA and operational data. They’re available as individual packages or as part of an integrated solution, and they’re designed to complement the teams we work alongside.
Amaro worked for myself and my team for eighteen months delivering a difficult project to improve resilience of the signalling infrastructure across the LNE and East Midlands routes. The project was difficult to deliver within the timescales and budget, but Amaro with their motivation, respect and agility delivered all the works successfully whilst improving relationships across the Network Rail Team. A fantastic job delivered by everyone in the Amaro team and look forward to working with them again on the next project.
Major engineering programmes are facing a shortage of specialist signalling and telecoms interface engineers, and the integration and commissioning stages can carry substantial programme risk. We support Network Rail and its partners, including Tier 1s, consultants and beyond, acting as a specialist extension of their project and delivery teams and adding support where those teams typically face constraints. That could be telecoms and signalling expertise, migration engineering, digital railway integration, or the provision of additional resource during commissioning.
ERTMS is the European standard for train control and communication, and ETCS is the part of this that handles signalling and train protection. The number of ETCS, Eurobalise and Tracklink 3 deployments across the network is increasing dramatically, with Amaro on hand to provide the end-to-end support that ETCS-compatible infrastructure needs.
Many deployments succeed technically but run into problems operationally, often due to conflicts between programme and delivery. With that in mind, we align Eurobalise implementation with the operator’s running strategy and train performance requirements, treating strict timetable reliability as our number one priority.
Telecoms dependencies are now one of the largest causes of signalling delays on the UK’s rail networks, which is precisely why we treat telecoms and signalling as one system. Our experienced, IRSE-qualified teams understand both environments intimately, and on the fibre side we provide delivery assurance for the critical communications backbone that both depend on.
Train operators increasingly expect digital outcomes alongside infrastructure delivery with demand for digital performance data growing as a result. By integrating asset data, providing remote monitoring interfaces and ensuring systems are ready to support performance analytics, we give operators improved visibility of their operational data, helping them to achieve digital railway outcomes without taking on the overheads of a dedicated digital programme.
For power upgrades, our SCADA support includes the hardware and software modifications needed for integration, from the configuration of new RTUs and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), to the updating of communication protocols and expanding telemetry capacity where required. All changes are aligned with the relevant standards and client specifications, not to mention being designed to be compatible with both existing systems and future expansion.
Our testing and commissioning includes factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing and integrated system testing, designed to confirm that control commands, indications, alarms and fail-safe operations perform as intended before entry into service. We also cover the likes of documentation updates, operator training and support throughout the transition to live operation, with all works planned around outage requirements in order to minimise operational disruption.
Our digital signalling support also covers SIL 3 signalling systems for depot infrastructure and user worked crossings (e.g. VAMOS), along with FWILD wheel sensor deployments.
