Apprenticeships at Amaro

Four places. One of the best starts to a career you could hope for. We’re now recruiting for our 2026 apprentice intake, with successful candidates starting their Amaro career in September. Whether you’re leaving school, college, or looking for a fresh challenge later in life, this could be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Why choose a rail apprenticeship?

Britain’s railway is one of the biggest, busiest and most complex networks in the world, and it needs skilled, committed people to keep it running. An apprenticeship is one of the best ways to become one of them.

You’ll earn a proper wage from your very first day, gain qualifications that are recognised right across the industry, and build up years of hands-on experience long before most of your friends have even started their careers. No tuition fees. No student debt. Just a real job, real responsibility, and a real future.

It’s also an industry that’s going places. From digital signalling to electrification, major upgrade programmes, and the shift towards a greener, more connected network, there’s never been a more exciting time to be a part of rail.

Who we’re looking for

Honestly? We’re less interested in your grades than we are in you as a person.

A great apprentice is someone with the right attitude: curious, willing to learn, and prepared to roll their sleeves up. Someone who wants to understand how things work, who isn’t afraid to ask questions, and who’s keen to build a career they can be proud of.

If any of the following sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you:

  • You’re finishing school or college and looking for a hands-on career rather than another three years in a classroom
  • You’ve had a job or two and realised that something more substantial, more technical, and more rewarding is what you’re really after
  • You’ve spent years in a different career and you’re ready for a fresh challenge, one that genuinely matters
  • You love problem-solving, working with your hands, being part of a team, and the idea of a job where no two days look the same

No previous rail experience required. No engineering background needed. We’ll teach you the technical side; what we can’t teach is character, and that’s really what we’re looking for.

Why Amaro?

There are a lot of companies out there offering rail apprenticeships. What makes Amaro different is the way we invest in the people who join us.

From day one, you’ll be part of a team that genuinely cares about your progress. You’ll have a personal career plan, regular reviews, and the kind of support that turns a promising start into a proper career. You’ll work alongside some of the most experienced engineers in the industry, on projects for the biggest names in rail. And you’ll do it within a business that has a culture most other firms can only talk about.

The proof is in the people. Many of our current apprentices found out about us through word of mouth, through family members already working here, or through a conversation with a current Amaro apprentice or engineer on site. That says more about life at Amaro than any website ever could.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for an Amaro apprenticeship?
Our apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 17 or over. Whether you’re leaving school or college, you’ve already had a job or two, or you’ve spent years in a different career and are looking for a change, we’d love to hear from you. What matters most to us isn’t your background or your grades, it’s your attitude, your willingness to learn, and your commitment to building a career you can be proud of.
Not at all. The vast majority of our apprentices join us with no prior rail experience whatsoever. We’ll teach you everything you need to know, supported by experienced engineers, trusted training providers and a clear, structured development plan.
We’re recruiting four apprentices for our 2026 intake. Successful candidates will start with us in September.
Our apprenticeship programme typically runs for around three years, combining classroom-based learning with hands-on experience on live rail projects. By the end, you’ll have earned an NVQ Level 3 in Rail Engineering along with a host of other industry-recognised qualifications and licences.
No two days are the same. You could be out on track at night supporting a major commissioning, working on a maintenance shift, attending formal training, or learning alongside our designers, planners and project managers in the office. Over time, you’ll gain exposure to all aspects of the railway, giving you a proper understanding of how it all fits together.
Our apprentices start on a salary of £28,000, with overtime bonuses on top. You’ll also receive paid holiday, workplace pension contributions, private healthcare, life insurance and access to professional institution memberships, all from day one.
Some of your shifts will be during evenings, nights or weekends, yes. That’s the nature of working on the UK’s live rail network, where a lot of the work has to happen when trains aren’t running. Don’t worry though, you’ll be eased in gradually, and the variety is part of what makes the job so rewarding. Your time off is also protected, giving you plenty of opportunity to rest and enjoy life outside of work.
Yes, our work takes us all over the UK, so there will be times when you’re working away from home. We provide transport, accommodation and subsistence when needed, and we always try to balance workload fairly across the team. Plenty of our apprentices tell us that travelling to new places and seeing different parts of the country is actually one of the best things about the job.
You’ll gain an NVQ Level 3 in Rail Engineering alongside a full suite of industry-standard competencies and licences, including IRSE licences relevant to your chosen discipline. Everything is paid for and fully supported by us.
The vast majority of our apprentices stay with us and progress into full-time roles. From there, the sky’s the limit. We’ll work with you on a personal career plan, helping you move into the areas you’re most passionate about, whether that’s installation, testing, design, project management or something else entirely.
Absolutely, and we’d actively encourage you to. We’re proud of the growing number of women joining our team, and our Women in Amaro initiative is all about making sure they’re properly supported and given every opportunity to thrive. Ask any of our female apprentices and they’ll tell you the same thing: on site, everyone is treated the same, everyone is part of one team, and everyone is there to do a great job.
Click any of the 'get in touch' buttons on this page or give us a call, and we’ll send you a short application form along with details of the next steps. If you're shortlisted you’ll be invited in for an informal interview, giving us a chance to get to know you and for you to find out more about life at Amaro. We aim to make the process as relaxed and straightforward as possible.
We’d encourage you to apply as soon as you can. Places are limited and we tend to fill them quickly. Successful candidates will start with us in September 2026.
