The challenge
Working directly for Network Rail and acting as the principal contractor on this project, Amaro was tasked with carrying out all surveying, design, testing, and installation works associated with the upgrade. This included procuring the necessary equipment and materials, providing relevant access planning, welfare, safety-critical support, and third-party labour.
In preparation for the installation works, Amaro’s team conducted detailed condition surveys before upgrading the three signals to the latest LED technology. This included updates to all associated sub-signals, location cases, distribution boxes, position lights, and tail cables.
A 7-strong Amaro team, supported by additional labour and plant services from Elite Project Services and Pro Rail Services, completed the following installation work:
VS 82 4-aspect signal
- Signal head renewed
- New plug coupler cable installed with a distribution box
- New tail cable installed from the distribution box to the location case
Works commissioned in January 2021.
The outcome
The final installation and commissioning shift at Wandsworth Road took place on 13th January 2024. This provided Network Rail with a vastly superior and more energy-efficient signalling solution, reducing maintenance requirements and improving reliability for the area’s rail users.
VS 84 4-aspect signal, sub-signal, and position light
- All items updated to LED
- New plug coupler cable installed for the main 4-aspect signal, connecting it to a distribution box
- New tail cable installed from the distribution box to the location case
- New tail cables installed for the sub-signal and position light signals
VS 86 4-aspect signal, sub-signal, and position light
- All items updated to LED
- New plug coupler cable installed for the main 4-aspect signal, connecting it to a distribution box
- New tail cable installed from the distribution box to the location case
- New tail cables installed for the sub-signal and position light signals
- Existing 8c, 4c, and 2c cables reused
All design, installation, and testing activities were conducted in full compliance with relevant Network Rail standards, including:
- Design: NR/CAT/STP/001 Issue 123
- Installation: NR/L3/SIG/11303
- Testing: NR/L3/SIG/11235
Additional outcomes:
- All scrap cables were removed, leaving the site tidy and secure
- Records were updated to reflect the changes and submitted to the relevant parties
- New maintenance cards, diagrams, and sighting records were placed in the relevant location case for future maintenance purposes
