Nexus Tyne and Wear Signalling and OLE Works

Supporting Stobart Rail and working on behalf of Nexus, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, Amaro were tasked with the signalling disconnection and reconnection works associated with a track renewal and re-alignment scheme between Felling Metro Station and Gateshead Metro Station.

  • All works delivered to programme and budget
  • Project delivered with zero accidents or incidents
  • A time critical workload with several complex interdependencies
  • Exceptional collaboration between all stakeholders

The challenge

Supporting the delivery of an £8m track renewal programme between the Felling and Gateshead Metro stations – part of Nexus’ £350m Metro All Change Modernisation Programme – Stobart Rail was contracted to replace and realign 1.6km of life-expired track in order to safeguard the Metro’s long-term future.

Amaro were tasked with disconnecting and subsequently reconnecting all of the signalling infrastructure impacted by the renewals.

The solution

Working across 3 intense 52 hour blockades, our team successfully removed, reconnected and tested equipment including (but not limited to) AWS, colour light signals, Reed track circuits, and train stops.

Amaro’s involvement on the Nexus project helped add much needed structure into what was a complex delivery project, with their team bringing the independent variables of time, cost, resources, and human behaviour together to great effect. Helping to make the overall project a huge success, I would certainly recommend this team for future complex works.

Wandsworth Road Signalling Upgrades

Wandsworth Road Signalling Upgrades

Advancements in technology, reliability, and energy efficiency – not to mention the need to reduce Network Rail’s maintenance burden – necessitated the upgrade of three filament-type signalling heads in and around the Wandsworth area. Linked to London’s wider multi-million-pound Victoria Resignalling Programme, these works saw the outdated units swapped out for cutting-edge LED replacements.

Wessex Signal Post Renewals

Wessex Signal Post Renewals

April 2024 saw Amaro instructed to replace two signals on the Wessex Route, both of which posed a safety risk due to significant levels of deterioration.

Victoria Cable Pulling

Cable Pulling – Phases 4 and 5, Victoria Area Re-Signalling Programme

First hitting site in August of 2022, Amaro was instructed to carry out all of the cable pulling associated with phases 4 and 5 of Network Rail’s Victoria Area Resignalling Programme (VARP) as part of a drive to boost asset reliability, improve passenger experiences and journey times, and reduce the ongoing maintenance burden upon the end client.
