Chelsea Speed Sign Installation

A direct award via Network Rail’s CP6 frameworks, Amaro was instructed to update a selection of end-of-life or non-compliant speed signage in and around Chelsea in West London.

  • Delivered on time, on budget, and with no lost time incidents
  • Speed signage was successfully updated throughout the area
  • Safety was improved for rail passengers and drivers

The challenge

With the passage of time and the updating of regulations, a number of speed signs within the Chelsea area needed to be replaced. Running from Latchmere No.3 to Imperial Wharf – and incorporating Chelsea River Bridge – much of the signage in this area was deemed to be life-expired, whilst other signs did not align with the implementation of a new speed limit over the bridge.

Amaro was instructed to amend the existing signage, relocating a number of signs, whilst installing new models as per the signal sighting forms supplied by the client.

The solution

Working under a master test plan, Amaro’s new works testers, installers and civils teams delivered the planned works over the course of three weekends utilising pre-planned possessions. Whilst the
first two possessions were both 8 hours in length, allowing for a degree of survey and preparatory works to be undertaken, the third was 27 hours long, and included the installation of a number of larger speed signs requiring 4.5m posts to be dug into the cess.

Given the nature of the works and the increased risk of a cable strike, all buried service plans were obtained and studied carefully prior to breaking ground. Further EML/CAT scanning was carried out
throughout the works and a ‘dig with caution’ policy was strictly implemented.

The outcome

All signage was successfully installed, sighted, and handed back into service at the end of the third possession with all documentation signed off by the Tester in Charge.

Wandsworth Road Signalling Upgrades

Wandsworth Road Signalling Upgrades

Advancements in technology, reliability, and energy efficiency – not to mention the need to reduce Network Rail’s maintenance burden – necessitated the upgrade of three filament-type signalling heads in and around the Wandsworth area. Linked to London’s wider multi-million-pound Victoria Resignalling Programme, these works saw the outdated units swapped out for cutting-edge LED replacements.

Wessex Signal Post Renewals

Wessex Signal Post Renewals

April 2024 saw Amaro instructed to replace two signals on the Wessex Route, both of which posed a safety risk due to significant levels of deterioration.

Victoria Cable Pulling

Cable Pulling – Phases 4 and 5, Victoria Area Re-Signalling Programme

First hitting site in August of 2022, Amaro was instructed to carry out all of the cable pulling associated with phases 4 and 5 of Network Rail’s Victoria Area Resignalling Programme (VARP) as part of a drive to boost asset reliability, improve passenger experiences and journey times, and reduce the ongoing maintenance burden upon the end client.
