Project scope
- Upgrading of distribution boards to provide spare capacity for the new lighting system
- Installation of new cable management systems throughout the station areas to support the new lighting systems
- Installation of new Abacus lighting columns and Dextra lights
- Installation of new PA systems
Project delivery
All three stations are fully operational and so required two separate 52hr possessions so that all works could be delivered safely whilst eliminating the risk of any moving trains during the works.
With the long possessions in place, Amaro put in a strict 12hr door-to-door policy to ensure no operative was fatigued during a shift.
Within the possessions, the platform extensions were installed with Amaro starting work on the lighting once the platforms had been completed to ensure a safe environment for all involved. We worked closely with other contractors and had daily start-of-shift meetings to segregate our works as much as possible.
The new Abacus lighting columns were of a raise and lower type with Amaro working closely with the manufacturer to ensure the correct training was given for the safe use of the counterbalance required.
Alongside the new installation, Amaro carried out some upgrade works to the existing lighting at all stations involving a range of different equipment.
The platform canopy lights were replaced with new LED fittings and required the installation of a new DALI system for full control of the lighting circuit. This was connected to all light fittings and commissioned so that the lights would turn on/off automatically whilst being controlled by a standard switch to override or dim at 50/100%.
Amaro was also tasked with carrying out a programme of maintenance and a fitting change to the stations’ winch-controlled column lighting. We had a number of operatives trained up for the safe use of the existing winch mechanism so that the light fittings could be lowered and replaced. While doing this, we carried out maintenance on the winch to ensure it was in good working order for future use with any defects being reported to Network Rail.
Our final task was to replace and relocate the timeclock and photocell on the platform canopy light fittings. The existing photocell was covered by large trees that had grown over the years, necessitating the relocation of the photocell to the other end of the canopy, rewiring it into a new timeclock for complete automatic control of all platform lighting.
